I am a 28-year old amateur rider based in the lovely countryside in Derbyshire. I have been riding for 18 years and competing for 5 of them with my 9 year old maxi cob Rein, I have had Rein since she was a foal which was the biggest and best decision I had ever made, making a commitment to owning a horse is one thing but to raise one is another we definitely have had our ups and downs and indeed horses also go through the terrible two’s and they have temper tantrums; after introducing her to the competing world and giving her mind something to concentrate on is something we both thoroughly enjoy ,even though we are always a bag of nerves we do the best we can.
We have competed in the in-hand classes successfully for 3 years entering in the cob classes and one of my favourites the concours d’elegance running in a long skirt is always fun, we now have been competing in the ridden classes for 2.5 years we are working our way up to the bigger classes and hoping to compete at HOYS or RIHS which is our dream, our biggest achievement so far was pulling in 8th out of 20 in a HOYS class ridden and judged by Lynn Russel we received comments stating that Rein gave a lovely ride and was a good cob against the producers was an amazing feeling.
You can follow our progress on our ridden classes both in maxi cob and now our new adventure into ridden concourse d’elegance on Instagram a.and.r.equestion and you can also follow us on our blog at mytypeofrein.wixsite.com/maxicob

I am a 24-year-old Event Rider based on a farm in Northamptonshire, currently in my final year of a degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy. I have been riding since I was old enough to go to the local riding school, my mum (best friend and unpaid groom!) wanted to make sure I understood the commitments of owning a pony before she would allow me to have my own! My eventing career started with a lovely schoolmistress, who helped me get over a nasty fall, the only horse I have had that I didn’t have to make myself. In 2014 I was given an amazing opportunity by Jane Richardson, she allowed me the ride on her lovely mare Summertime Penny, whom my Dad later brought for my 21st birthday. Penny has been the highlight of my career in eventing, having never evented before she quickly moved up the grades from BE100 to Intermediate and CCI* in just a year. Some of her highlights were a double clear at Rockingham CIC* and finishing in the top third at Hartpury CCI*. Unfortunately, we lost her in 2016, but she will forever be with us, I don’t think I will ever own a horse again who can run for an entire season with no XC faults! This season the highlights are on my lovely 7-year-old Bit of a Chill by Chilli Morning who will be contesting BE100 with the hope to move up to Novice, and 10-year-old Dylano owned by Liz Donald, who will be contesting BE Novice/CCI* with the hope to make the move up to Intermediate. I’m a 31 year old Mummy of 2 boys (10 and 6) and wife to a very busy Farmer. I run Kingthistle Equestrian which is based on the farm in the South West. I take horses for short term schooling and holiday cover. I enjoy the variation this brings and adapting to the different characters. I’m a trainee BD judge and BD Wiltshire County Coordinator which keeps me busy when not in the saddle. It’s amazing how much you can learn just watching and helping. It’s definitely something I’d recommend!
My main horse “Kingthistle Darcy” came to me straight from the hunting fields with no concept of flatwork. We’ve competed both in Show Jumping and Eventing but have concentrated on Dressage since 2015. We have been fortunate to attend and place at many Championships and Darcy definitely knows when he’s in front of more than one judge! He really steps up to the atmosphere and it my job to make sure I can contain it and show him off to his best. We’ve a few career highlights so far which include taking the National Team title in 2015 with Bath RC - Darcy and I also won our section that day and it’s still the most surreal competition I’ve been to. We have also represented the South West and England in BD team Championships which is something I’m incredibly proud of.
Moving forward our aim is to continue with positive, proactive and consistent training. We have 2 classes at the National Finals at Hartpury in April and aiming for a place to the Trailblazers Finals at Elementary later in the Summer as well as heading out at Medium later in the year.
It’s not always easy but it is always an opportunity to learn and get better.
